DUBAI // The Roads and Transport Authority has denied reports that it has agreed to issue driving licences to 16 year olds.

RTA said specifying the age limit for drivers is subject to UAE Federal Traffic Law and can only be changed by the Federal Government.

“The RTA does not favour reducing the age set for driver licence applicants as it is contrary to the principles of traffic safety,” said Ahmed Bahrozyan, chief executive of RTA Licensing Agency.

“The RTA calls for introducing controls and applying to newly licensed drivers in accordance with the top practices applicable in pioneering countries in the field of traffic safety and drivers licensing.”
