DUBAI // A new device has been designed by Dubai Police to detect motorists driving on the hard shoulder.
The battery-operated, portable device is equipped with a high-resolution camera and sound detector that recognises when motorists cross onto the hard shoulder, said Major General Khamis Mattar Al Mazeina, commander in chief of Dubai Police.
He said police have put in an order for 20 devices to be built for use on roads in the emirate.
“The device is aimed at discouraging offenders and realising the strategic goal of Dubai Police to secure roads and guarantee the safety of motorists,” said Maj Gen Al Mazeina.
Driving on the hard shoulder can have serious consequences, such as increased accident risks and hindering the movement of the police, ambulances and fire engines, he added.
Offenders face a Dh600 fine, six black points on their licence and have their car impounded for one month.
