Four people died and another was injured in a collision between a lorry and a pickup truck in the Western Region.
Initial investigations suggest the driver of the pick-up vehicle was driving rashly and against the flow of traffic, and collided with the lorry on Habshan Road in the Western Region, police say.
Three Asians and a Somali died in the accident and the driver of the pickup was seriously injured.
Col Suhail Al Mazroui, chief of the Abu Dhabi traffic police in the Western Region, said traffic patrols rushed to the scene and ensured the traffic flow was not disrupted. The injured driver was taken to Madinat Zayed Hospital by ambulance.
Col Al Mazroui urged motorists to drive safely and slowly and keep a safe distance from other vehicles. He said motorists should do a periodic check on their vehicles and make sure to strap their seat belts on.
The police chief warned that driving against the flow of traffic was a serious offence and could have fatal results.
He said Abu Dhabi Police were taking steps to make the Abu Dhabi to Al Sila highway safer and reduce accidents and injuries by stepping up traffic controls and increasing the number of mobile speed radars along the stretch.
