DUBAI // Two metro stations were renamed yesterday as part of the the Dubai Metro Station Naming Rights Project.
Khalid bin Al Waleed is now Burjuman, while Jebel Ali has become Danube station.
The Roads and Transport Authority said it planned to link all stops with homegrown and international companies.
"It is a huge plus for us," said Adnan Al Hammadi, the chief executive of the Rail Agency.
Other stops on the Red and Green lines that have partnered with malls or corporations include Mall of the Emirates, Deira City Centre and Etisalat.
"The RTA is keen on enabling various companies, public or private, to take part in the Metro Stations Naming Rights Project," Mr Al Hammadi said. "It contributes to increasing the national and international companies' brand awareness and reinforces their positioning in Dubai, besides playing a bigger and more prominent role in upgrading the metro project."
The RTA could not confirm how much it cost Burjuman Mall and Danube, a building materials company, to buy the rights to the names or when they would come into effect.
About 300,000 passengers have used the Metro daily since its launch three years ago. Four express train services launched in October to reduce the commute time from Rashidiya to Jebel Ali.
