Faulty tyres kill eight people in Dubai this year, police say

Warning to drivers to check tyres regularly to ensure people's safety.

Faulty tyres have caused the deaths of eight people and have seriously injured 35 in three traffic accidents in Dubai in the past seven months, police said on Monday.

The General Department of Traffic is urging drivers to check tyres to avoid blowouts, which lead to accidents that can end fatally.

“Motorists can pose a serious threat to themselves as well as others by driving on faulty tyres or expired tyres, especially that fact that the tyre can easily blow out,” said Colonel Saif Muhair Al Mazrouei, director of the traffic department.

Car accidents caused by tyre blowouts can lead to collisions with other cars or sudden swerving, Colonel Al Mazrouei said.

He added that 2,248 motorists were hit with fines for driving their vehicles with faulty or expires tyres in the past seven months. In the whole of last year, a total of 5,594 similar offences were recorded in Dubai.

Dubai Police has inspected 1,109 tyres as part of its summer without accidents campaign this summer. Also, brochures were distributed to drivers about the use of certified tyres, fitted properly, meeting the correct size and specifications for the vehicle and the importance of routinely checking tyre pressure.

Colonel Al Mazrouei advised motorists to check their vehicles’ tyres to ensure their own safety.
