Telecom operators in the UAE marked the anniversary of Dubai Metro by changing the network name on mobile handsets.
Phone users on the Etisalat and du networks woke on Monday to see the words ‘Dubai Metro’ had appeared along the top of their phone screens.
The name change was made to celebrate the Metro’s tenth year in operation and was a nod to its great success.
About 1.5 billion passengers have used Dubai Metro since it opened 10 years ago, on September 9, 2009, at 9.09pm.
Now one of the most popular public transport means in Dubai, the Metro was introduced to tackle traffic congestion caused by the city’s rapidly growing population.
With tickets starting at a few dirhams, Dubai Metro recorded 101 million trips between January and June this year, making it one of the preferred transport options for commuters in the city.
Etisalat and du often make temporary changes to network names to mark different observation days in the UAE.
In 2018, to mark Commemoration Day, the icon Nov30 appeared across the top of phone screens in tribute to the servicemen and women who have fallen while serving their country.
