DUBAI // Eight people were killed in traffic incidents in the first 10 days of Ramadan.

Dubai Police recorded 26 incidents, in which 40 vehicles were involved. In addition to the eight dead, one was seriously injured, six sustained moderate injuries and five were minor cases.

Of the 26 incidents, 10 involved vehicles crashing, five were run-over incidents and four involved a vehicle flipping over. Other incidents included one driver crashing into a pole, two hitting the pavement and two hitting cement barriers.

Col Saif Al Mazrouei, director of the General Department of Traffic, has repeatedly warned motorists to abide by the traffic rules and has said there will be no leniency during the holy month.

He urged people to be careful, especially in the hours leading up to iftar, when Muslims break their fast.

Dubai Police has dispatched additional patrols during Ramadan, including near mosques and popular shopping areas.

WHAT IS A BLACK HOLE?

1. Black holes are objects whose gravity is so strong not even light can escape their pull

2. They can be created when massive stars collapse under their own weight

3. Large black holes can also be formed when smaller ones collide and merge

4. The biggest black holes lurk at the centre of many galaxies, including our own

5. Astronomers believe that when the universe was very young, black holes affected how galaxies formed
