The Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) will soon launch a trial run of electric buses in Dubai.

The buses will be powered by electricity supplied by rechargeable batteries that can be recharged up to 80 per cent in less than 30 minutes. The RTA will coordinate with the Dubai Electricity & Water Authority (Dewa) about future steps as regards providing the infrastructure of electric vehicles.

The pilot project will allow the RTA to assess environmental benefits, measure the rate of reduced carbon emissions, identify the distance covered by the bus following each battery recharge, in addition to other parameters, said Mattar Al Tayer, executive director of the RTA.

“In the light of these assessments, the RTA will decide on the next step to be taken,” Mr Al Tayer said.
