Three popular metro stations in Dubai have been renamed, it was announced on Monday.
Dubai’s Roads and Transport Authority has renamed Sharaf DG metro station Mashreq metro station; Palm Deira station is now Gold Souq; and Nakheel Harbour and Tower is Jebel Ali station.
Mashreq Bank has been given the rights to feature its products around the Business Bay and Burj Khalifa station.
“RTA mapped out a plan for finalising the renaming of the three metro stations between May 18 to June 2,” said Hassan Al Mutawa, director of operation at the RTA’s rail agency.
“It involves changing the external signs, updating the smart and e-systems of public transport as well as updating the audio announcement on board metro cabins.
“We would like to bring to the attention of Dubai metro riders the changes in the names of stations on the modes mentioned above.”
The construction theme for the Dubai Metro stations is the four elements of nature: fire, water, air and earth.
Mashreq Station is an elevated station and can accommodate up to 14,244 riders during rush hours, with a daily capacity of 256,392 people.
Jebel Ali Station, a transfer stop between the Red Line and Route 2020, can accommodate 320,000 passengers daily.
Gold Souq Station is an underground station in the old part of the city and can handle 475,488 people every day.
