ABU DHABI // Passengers will be able to use their smartphones and credit cards to pay for taxis before the end the year.

The Centre for Regulation of Transport by Hire Cars (TransAD) plans on rolling out the service first to airport taxis as a trial before implementing the smart service across the emirate.

Mohammed Qamzi, director general of the centre, told Al Ittihad, the Arabic-language sister newspaper of The National, that passengers will be able to use an in-house developed smartphone app named “Abu Dhabi Taxi” to pay for their fare.

The Centre also recently won the award for the best government service at the level of local governments at the conclusion of the Government Summit 2014.
