ABU DHABI // More than 400 cars were impounded in the emirate for breaking National Day decoration rules and the breach of traffic laws, police said.

Owners of the 427 vehicles were also fined Dh1,000 and received 12 black points each, according to Traffic and Patrols Directorate statistics.

Brig Hussein Ahmed Al Harithi, director general of central operations at Abu Dhabi Police, said patrols were out in force on National Day to monitor vehicles and fine anyone in breach of guidelines.

Of the 427 impounded vehicles, 297 were in Abu Dhabi city; 87 were in Al Ain; and 43 were in the Western Region.

Brig Al Harithi said that 249 vehicles, or 58 per cent, were impounded for causing noise and disturbance.

Other causes included reckless driving and endangering the safety of other road users, exaggerated painting, dangerously overloading light vehicles, using sprays on vehicles, leaning out the vehicle’s windows or sunroof and performing alterations to the vehicles.

Brig Al Harithi urged motorists to remove any remaining decorations to avoid being fined because the car decoration period had ended.
