DUBAI // Toyota has recalled 1,395 vehicles in the UAE because of an airbag fault.

The recall affects Avalon models made between August 2011 and June this year.

The car maker was forced to take action over concerns about a leak that could cause airbags to stop working or deploy unexpectedly.

“Toyota Motor Corporation has informed us that if the condenser drain hose becomes clogged, condensed water can accumulate at the bottom of the air-conditioning condenser housing,” said a spokesman for Al Futtaim Motors, the local Toyota dealership.

“Due to the location of the housing seam, which is directly above the airbag control module, the accumulated water could leak through the seam on to the module. In some instances, if the circuit board inside the module becomes wet it could result in illumination of the airbag warning light.

“In some instances, the airbag could become disabled or could inadvertently deploy. In rare cases, other components may also be affected.”

The local action is part of a global recall of 855,000 Camrys, Camry Hybrids, Avalons, Avalon Hybrids and Venzas.

This includes 847,000 cars in North America, with the remainder spread across Europe, Asia and the Middle East.
