DUBAI // Three people were hurt after their car hit a runaway horse in Al Khuwaneej on Saturday evening.

The man and his two wives were driving in Al Omari Road when their vehicle collided with the horse. The animal died and the man’s car was badly damaged in the accident.

Colonel Saif Muhair Al Mazroui, director of the general of the Department of Traffic at Dubai Police, said: “The man tried to swerve and avoid the horse but unfortunately he couldn’t avoid hurting himself and his passengers in the accident.”

It is unclear how the horse had made its way to the busy road or who it belonged to.

Accidents where animals wander into the path of cars are not uncommon in the UAE, although they mostly involve camels.

The number of vehicles hitting stray animals in Ras Al Khaimah was 213 last year, down from 292 the previous year. Statistics aren’t available for the rest of the emirates.
