DUBAI // A taxi driver locked two women in his cab in the early hours of the morning in Dubai Marina after they refused to pay their Dh25 fare.
In May this year, at around 4.30am, the 27-year-old Indian driver picked up the two women, whose ages and nationalities were not in court records, who asked to be taken to a nearby hotel.
“When he dropped us he told us to pay Dh25, though he did not start the meter. When we asked him why he did not turn it on, he told us the maximum payment for short distances is Dh25, which we refused to pay and he locked us inside the taxi,” said one of the women.
A security officer at the hotel where the women were staying told the driver to open the doors.
“Both women were trying to open the taxi doors, I approached the driver who told me the women refused to pay him. I told him to open the doors or I will contact the police,” said the Sri Lankan.
“One of the women tried to take a picture of the cabbie but he came at her as if he would attack her, I stood in his way. He then left.”
At Dubai Criminal court the driver denied a charge of confinement.
The next hearing is set for January 10.
