DUBAI // A man who was detained on suspicion of taking drugs took out a blade from inside his mouth and used it to cut his wrist in an attempt to end his life.

Emirati A N, 30, was arrested in July last year after police suspected he was on drugs. Unbeknown to police, he had smuggled in a blade in his mouth and, on July 6, while in his cell at the anti-narcotics department, he used it to cut his wrist and injure his chest.

At Dubai Court of Misdemeanours the Emirati denied a charge of attempting suicide and said that the injuries he suffers were old wounds that got opened because the police captain who handcuffed him tightened the handcuffs.

He claimed that he previously fell on a mirror at home, which caused the wrist and chest wounds.

“I don’t even know where police got the blade from, because I know nothing about it,” he said.

Emirati policeman K M, 26, said: “He was bleeding heavily from his wrist and I noticed a wound in his chest as well. I called for an ambulance to take him to hospital but he wouldn’t go, he refused.

“The medics had to make the treatment in the detention centre.”

The man was found guilty and fined Dh1,000.

There was no mention of whether or not he will be charged over any drug offence.
