DUBAI // The supersonic skydiver Felix Baumgartner, who jumped from the edge of space, will drop into Dubai for an award at the closing ceremony of the World Parachuting Championship Mondial 2012.
The world record breaking 43-year-old Austrian, who became known as “Fearless Felix”, will be the guest of honour this weekend.
He entered the record books in October when he jumped from a helium balloon 34 kilometres up and reached an estimated speed of 1,342kph, becoming the first parachutist to break the sound barrier.
The closing ceremony, on Sunday, will see Katy Perry and Usher take to the stage at the Meydan Racecourse. Regular standing tickets are available for Dh450.
Baumgartner is set to make an appearance during the concert, where most of the 1,400 daredevils competing in the championships will be celebrating the end of the 11-day competition.
According to Thomas Ovesen, the chief executive of Done Events, free shuttle buses will ferry concert-goers back to the city after the event.
“With the announcement of Mr Baumgartner attending the event, the unveiling of the action-packed programme and with two fantastic concerts lined up we are looking forward to a great event and an exciting end to the World Parachuting Championships,” Mr Ovesen said.

Also on December 7 to 9, the third edition of the Gulf Car Festival (www.gulfcarfestival.com) will take over Dubai Festival City Mall, a new venue for the event. Last year's festival brought together about 900 cars worth more than Dh300 million from across the Emirates and wider Gulf region – and that first figure is set to swell by several hundred this time around, with between 1,000 and 1,200 cars expected. The first day is themed around American muscle; the second centres on supercars, exotics, European cars and classics; and the final day will major in JDM (Japanese domestic market) cars, tuned vehicles and trucks. Individuals and car clubs can register their vehicles, although the festival isn’t all static displays, with stunt drifting, a rev battle, car pulls and a burnout competition.

Why it pays to compare
A comparison of sending Dh20,000 from the UAE using two different routes at the same time - the first direct from a UAE bank to a bank in Germany, and the second from the same UAE bank via an online platform to Germany - found key differences in cost and speed. The transfers were both initiated on January 30.
