A sports journalist was arrested in Abu Dhabi after posting racial slurs on Twitter, according to the Abu Dhabi Judicial Department on Wednesday.

The warrant was issued by Abu Dhabi Public Prosecution Office in accordance with UAE law which criminalises discrimination and incitement to hatred. The journalist is also accused of misusing modern technology for criminal purposes.

The Prosecution said the UAE has strict laws in place to prevent such behaviour that spreads discrimination through the country’s diverse society.

“Respecting the privacy and diversity of others under the umbrella of the law has effectively contributed to the country’s leadership vision in building a secure society and building a competitive economy that is sustainable and globally open,” a statement from ADJD said.

Prosecutors said the accused’s position as a journalist exacerbates his crime as he is considered a public figure with influence online.

ADJD warned the public against publishing content – both audio and visual - that is considered harmful to society at the risk of legal action.
