Sixty motorists have been fined for abandoning their vehicles in residential communities and public areas of the capital.

Abu Dhabi Municipality issued the fines as part of a campaign to maintain the appearance of the city, in collaboration with the Water Management Centre in Abu Dhabi.

Owners of offending vehicles will be fined Dh3,000 for breaking Law No 2 for 2012 which aims to protect the public appearance and tranquility of the city and applies to all vehicles, trailers and boats.

Abandoned vehicles will be towed and held at impounding yards in Al Wathba and Al Mafraq.

The campaign, which covers Al Samha, Al Bahya, Al Rahba, Al Shelaila and Al Shahama, seeks to educate the public of the importance of keeping their vehicles clean to uphold the image of the city.

Offending motorists can report to the Municipality to reach a settlement where they will be granted a 50 per cent discount on their first fine but should the offence reoccur, the fine will be doubled and daily impounding fees will be applied depending on the type of vehicle and the area from which the vehicle is removed.

The Municipality called on individuals who travel abroad for long periods of time to cover their vehicles or arrange to have them cleaned frequently to avoid fines.
