Sixth season of Prince of Poets contest seeks bards of the desert

ABU DHABI // If you think you have the write stuff to demonstrate that you are the Prince of Poets, registration is now open to find the best classical Arab poet, state news agency Wam reports.

The sixth season of the Prince of Poets is expected to attract some of the most talented speakers from across the Arab world with Dh 1 million prize money.

Anyone interested in taking part can submit their application until October 10.

“The Prince of Poets and the Million’s Poet, the biggest TV programme of its kind in the world, have succeeded in attracting millions of Arab viewers from around the world,” said Mohammed Khalaf Al Mazrouei, Culture and Heritage adviser at the Court of the Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi, and chairman of the Cultural Programmes and Heritage Festivals Committee Abu Dhabi.

“The Prince of Poets project seeks to endorse and refine classical Arabic poetry, while providing encouragement to talented poets.

“The contest, held every two years, alternately with the Million’s Poet competition, seeks to promote the role of poetry in Arabic culture,” Mr Al Mazrouei said.

“The project also aims at drawing attention to the significant role of Abu Dhabi in the strengthening of interaction and dialogue between the poets of classical poetry in all parts of the world.”

Participants must be between 18 and 45 and submit one poem composed in classical Arabic. Prince of Poets is organised by the Cultural Programmes and Heritage Festivals Committee Abu Dhabi.
