DUBAI // A beautician who earned too little to give her mother money for medical treatment became drunk and tried to kill herself.
K M, a Pakistani who works at a salon in Ajman, told the Court of Misdemeanours that she came to the UAE 18 months ago to help her mother, who has a heart condition.
About midnight on March 26, she went to a nightclub at a Dubai hotel where she drank until 3am.
She said she went home and became depressed about her inability to afford her mother’s treatment.
“I thought of how I am unable to help her. I felt desperate so I walked to the kitchen and picked up a small knife then cut my wrist.”
She was taken to Rashid Hospital for treatment to a 7-centimetre cut in her wrist. She had also carved unreadable words into her arm.
She confessed to drinking without a licence and trying to commit suicide. A verdict has been scheduled for Monday next week.

Terror attacks in Paris, November 13, 2015
- At 9.16pm, three suicide attackers killed one person outside the Atade de France during a foootball match between France and Germany
- At 9.25pm, three attackers opened fire on restaurants and cafes over 20 minutes, killing 39 people
- Shortly after 9.40pm, three other attackers launched a three-hour raid on the Bataclan, in which 1,500 people had gathered to watch a rock concert. In total, 90 people were killed
- Salah Abdeslam, the only survivor of the terrorists, did not directly participate in the attacks, thought to be due to a technical glitch in his suicide vest
- He fled to Belgium and was involved in attacks on Brussels in March 2016. He is serving a life sentence in France

Tomato and walnut salad
A lesson in simple, seasonal eating. Wedges of tomato, chunks of cucumber, thinly sliced red onion, coriander or parsley leaves, and perhaps some fresh dill are drizzled with a crushed walnut and garlic dressing. This healthy little dish (a nice antidote to the khachapuri) is usually made with steamed then chopped cabbage, spinach, beetroot or green beans, combined with walnuts, garlic and herbs to make a vegetable pâté or paste. The mix is then often formed into rounds, chilled in the fridge and topped with pomegranate seeds before being served.
