Sheikha Fatima hails UAE's 'icons of tolerance' on Emirati Women's Day

The UAE's Mother of the Nation has hailed trailblazing Emirati women as "icons of tolerance" and a major driving force behind the rise of the country.

Sheikha Fatima paid tribute to the burgeoning role of women in society to mark Emirati Women's Day, a  pivotal occasion in the UAE calendar which she launched in 2015.

Sheikha Fatima, chairwoman of the General Women's Union and president of the Supreme Council for Motherhood, praised the efforts of the country's leadership to enable women to break down barriers and play an integral part in shaping the future of the Emirates.

She highlighted the directive by UAE President Sheikh Khalifa, to ensure the Federal National Council is represented equally by men and women after the coming elections, as a shining example of progressive policy.

"The chosen slogan of our celebration, 'Women are Icons of Tolerance', is a real reflection of the real nature of women, who are always compassionate and tender and deal with others with softness and kindness, because they are mothers and educators, especially the educated young women who always aspire to reach the highest levels of science," said Sheikha Fatima.

In 2017, Sheikha Fatima, widow of Sheikh Zayed, the Founding Father of the UAE, was honoured by UN Women, a global champion for gender equality.

She said UAE rulers were following in the footsteps of Sheikh Zayed, who laid the groundwork for a society that encourages the contributions of all its members, regardless of gender.

"Our leadership  has made the decision to give women everything they deserve and enabled them to participate with men in all areas of work," she said.

Sheikha Fatima said Emirati women should be proud of their achievements and called on them to continue to be equal partners in the ongoing development of the UAE.

She said women in the country can be inspiring role models who make an impact on both the regional and global stage.

Pinpointing the country's sharp focus on female empowerment, she heaped praise on the success of a UAE initiative to train a group of Arab women in peacekeeping operations.

The  project was successfully completed in partnership with the UN Women, UAE Ministry of Defence and the General Women's Union, and graduated 134 women representing seven Arab countries.

"This is what we have achieved. We are moving into the second phase of this experiment to train another group of women in Africa and Asia," she said.

HIV on the rise in the region

A 2019 United Nations special analysis on Aids reveals 37 per cent of new HIV infections in the Mena region are from people injecting drugs.

New HIV infections have also risen by 29 per cent in western Europe and Asia, and by 7 per cent in Latin America, but declined elsewhere.

Egypt has shown the highest increase in recorded cases of HIV since 2010, up by 196 per cent.

Access to HIV testing, treatment and care in the region is well below the global average.

Few statistics have been published on the number of cases in the UAE, although a UNAIDS report said 1.5 per cent of the prison population has the virus.

Water waste

In the UAE’s arid climate, small shrubs, bushes and flower beds usually require about six litres of water per square metre, daily. That increases to 12 litres per square metre a day for small trees, and 300 litres for palm trees.

Horticulturists suggest the best time for watering is before 8am or after 6pm, when water won't be dried up by the sun.

A global report published by the Water Resources Institute in August, ranked the UAE 10th out of 164 nations where water supplies are most stretched.

The Emirates is the world’s third largest per capita water consumer after the US and Canada.

The burning issue

The internal combustion engine is facing a watershed moment – major manufacturer Volvo is to stop producing petroleum-powered vehicles by 2021 and countries in Europe, including the UK, have vowed to ban their sale before 2040. The National takes a look at the story of one of the most successful technologies of the last 100 years and how it has impacted life in the UAE.

Mia Man’s tips for fermentation

- Start with a simple recipe such as yogurt or sauerkraut

- Keep your hands and kitchen tools clean. Sanitize knives, cutting boards, tongs and storage jars with boiling water before you start.

- Mold is bad: the colour pink is a sign of mold. If yogurt turns pink as it ferments, you need to discard it and start again. For kraut, if you remove the top leaves and see any sign of mold, you should discard the batch.

- Always use clean, closed, airtight lids and containers such as mason jars when fermenting yogurt and kraut. Keep the lid closed to prevent insects and contaminants from getting in.
