SHARJAH // A senior police officer says roads in the central region are among the most dangerous in Sharjah after two accidents there at the weekend killed six people.

Brigadier Saif Al Zari said motorists often sped in rural areas and that their lack of care and attention could lead to tragedy. He said that road improvements would aim to reduce accidents.

On Saturday, three Indian students from Dubai died on Al Madam-Al Dhaid road, while another motorist sustained severe injuries. Two of the students were 20 and the other was 21.

The students entered the road from a prohibited area without ensuring that the road was clear and collided with another vehicle, police said.

On Friday, three children – aged 6, 13, and 14 – were crushed to death after the car they were in was hit by a speeding lorry in the central region.

Their 37-year-old mother and two other siblings, aged 8 and 3, suffered severe injuries when the lorry drove through a red light and hit their car.

An average of 30 lives are lost on the Muleiha-Kalba road every year, according to police.

A third lane will be added to that road, and the concrete separator in the middle will be removed.

In Sharjah, five run-over accidents occur on the emirate’s roads every month on average.
