A medical research centre in Sharjah has registered 41 people who expressed a desire to donate their bone marrow to patients around the world.

The registry is maintained by the Ministry of Health's blood transfusion and research centre in Sharjah.

In the past three years, the centre has helped 26 patients find bone marrow donors, The National's Arabic-language sister paper, Al Ittihad, reported. The patients who benefited were based in the UAE as well as abroad, in Saudi Arabia, Lebanon, the United States, Switzerland, Germany, Singapore and Hong Kong, said Dr Amin Al Amiri, assistant undersecretary at the Ministry of Health and chairman of the National Committee for Blood Transfusion.

The blood transfusion centre is also playing "an outstanding role" in supporting schemes for marrow transportation and transplant within the countries of the region, as part of collaborative efforts led by the Europe-based Worldwide Network for Blood and Marrow Transplantation.
