Seventeen speed cameras will be installed along the Seih Al Sideira to Al Faqaa intersection on the outskirts of the capital on Tuesday.
The solar-powered speed cameras will be dotted along the two roads from Maha Forest to Ashoush, and from Al Sudaira Tunnel to Al Faqa Intersection.
The speed limit along the road is set to 80kmh with the cameras programmed to photograph drivers of light vehicles travelling faster than 101kmh and 81kmh for heavy vehicle drivers.
Brig Ali Al Dhaheri, director-general of central operations at Abu Dhabi police said the installation of the cameras is part of efforts to improve traffic safety, curb speeding and in turn help avoid accidents.
“Abu Dhabi Police is keen to improve traffic safety in the emirate, it’s part of the efforts to reduce the number of road traffic fatalities and accidents and to make roads safer,” said Brig Al Dhaheri.
He said the locations for each camera were chosen based on the number of accidents and traffic offences in the area.
Police said aside from catching speeding, the cameras will also be able to measure the distance between vehicles to catch tailgaters and detect when a motorist drives on the hard shoulder.
