Security guard jailed for molesting girl, 16, on roof of Dubai building

DUBAI // A security guard has been jailed for molesting a girl, 16, on the roof of her building.

The Bangladeshi guard, 35, told judges he met the girl by coincidence on the roof and asked her what she was doing up there alone. He said he did not molest her and denied sexual assault.

On December 9 last year, the guard touched the girl’s breast against her will as she tried to leave the roof of the building in the Raffa area of Bur Dubai.

“I went for some air after I was done with my exercising,” the Filipina schoolgirl said. “Minutes later he came and asked me what I was doing. I told him and then tried to get away but he blocked my way and touched me.

“When I got to our apartment, my father noticed I was scared and asked me about it so I told him and he called police.”

Her father, 42, said his daughter told him in detail what had happened.

Dubai Criminal Court sentenced the guard to three months in jail. He will be deported after completing his jail term.

What are NFTs?

Are non-fungible tokens a currency, asset, or a licensing instrument? Arnab Das, global market strategist EMEA at Invesco, says they are mix of all of three.

You can buy, hold and use NFTs just like US dollars and Bitcoins. “They can appreciate in value and even produce cash flows.”

However, while money is fungible, NFTs are not. “One Bitcoin, dollar, euro or dirham is largely indistinguishable from the next. Nothing ties a dollar bill to a particular owner, for example. Nor does it tie you to to any goods, services or assets you bought with that currency. In contrast, NFTs confer specific ownership,” Mr Das says.

This makes NFTs closer to a piece of intellectual property such as a work of art or licence, as you can claim royalties or profit by exchanging it at a higher value later, Mr Das says. “They could provide a sustainable income stream.”

This income will depend on future demand and use, which makes NFTs difficult to value. “However, there is a credible use case for many forms of intellectual property, notably art, songs, videos,” Mr Das says.

What are the main cyber security threats?

Cyber crime - This includes fraud, impersonation, scams and deepfake technology, tactics that are increasingly targeting infrastructure and exploiting human vulnerabilities.
Cyber terrorism - Social media platforms are used to spread radical ideologies, misinformation and disinformation, often with the aim of disrupting critical infrastructure such as power grids.
Cyber warfare - Shaped by geopolitical tension, hostile actors seek to infiltrate and compromise national infrastructure, using one country’s systems as a springboard to launch attacks on others.
