A fraudster saleswoman who forged dozens of customer applications in order to get her hands on nearly Dh200,000 of mobile phones and sim cards has been given a six month jail sentence.
The telecoms worker, 37, applied for 56 phone - 37 iPhones and 19 Samsung smartphones - and 56 SIM cards using fake names as well as the details of customers.
She ran up more than Dh30,000 of bills on the illegally obtained phones and sim cards over a period of two years.
The crimes, which took place between August, 2013 and July, 2015, were uncovered when customers noticed they were receiving payment requests for phones they did not own.
“We were alerted after 28 clients, whose names were used on some of the applications, complained against bills of services they hadn’t used,” said the telecom company's Emirati internal auditing manager.
the saleswoman confessed her crimes when confronted by management after an internal investigation.
She was convicted of charges of abusing her position, forgery, use of forged documents and embezzlement at Dubai Criminal Court.
She must pay a fine of Dh150,000 and pay Dh21,000 in compensation to the company.
She will be deported at the end of her sentence.

Iran has sent five planeloads of food to Qatar, which is suffering shortages amid a regional blockade.
A number of nations, including Iran's major rival Saudi Arabia, last week cut ties with Qatar, accusing it of funding terrorism, charges it denies.
The land border with Saudi Arabia, through which 40% of Qatar's food comes, has been closed.
Meanwhile, mediators Kuwait said that Qatar was ready to listen to the "qualms" of its neighbours.

Farage on Muslim Brotherhood
Nigel Farage told Reform's annual conference that the party will proscribe the Muslim Brotherhood if he becomes Prime Minister.
"We will stop dangerous organisations with links to terrorism operating in our country," he said. "Quite why we've been so gutless about this – both Labour and Conservative – I don't know.
“All across the Middle East, countries have banned and proscribed the Muslim Brotherhood as a dangerous organisation. We will do the very same.”
It is 10 years since a ground-breaking report into the Muslim Brotherhood by Sir John Jenkins.
Among the former diplomat's findings was an assessment that “the use of extreme violence in the pursuit of the perfect Islamic society” has “never been institutionally disowned” by the movement.
The prime minister at the time, David Cameron, who commissioned the report, said membership or association with the Muslim Brotherhood was a "possible indicator of extremism" but it would not be banned.
