Abu Dhabi residents produced an average of two kilograms of waste per person per day in the first half of the year.

Abu Dhabi Waste Management Centre, or Tadweer, collected 1,147,844 tonnes of waste in the first six months of the year, excluding industrial and commercial waste, which is managed separately.

The emirate’s growing population and over-consumption are blame for it’s growing waste production, said Tadweer’s acting general manager.

Tadweer has opened recycling centres in the city but the public must take action by cutting its consumption.

"The rapid population growth and unprecedented urbanisation in the emirate of Abu Dhabi, have led to a dramatic increase in consumption and waste production,” said Salem Al Kaabi.

“Since early 2018, Tadweer has intensified its efforts to address the environmental challenges facing the emirate of Abu Dhabi and mitigate the adverse impact of waste on our environment.

"As part of this priority, we have implemented several innovative projects such as Abu Dhabi’s first civic amenity for recyclable materials in the Abu Dhabi City with the provision of other types of recycling centres in the city,” he said.

Countries that are part of the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development produce nearly half of the world's waste, averaging of 2.2kg of municipal solid waste per person per day, according to the World Bank.

Tadweer urges a culture of “resource conservation”, said Mr Al Kaabi.

Municipal solid waste — everyday domestic rubbish — makes up 40 per cent of waste collected.

Green waste from residential areas and farms accounts for just over a fifth of waste production.

Bulky waste, too large for regular collection, makes up 5 per cent.
