Police rescue two cars trapped by floodwater in Hatta

The Dubai Police rescue team have extracted a car that was trapped in a valley flooded with rainwater and another vehicle that fell in a hole in Hatta.

Lt Col Ali Abdullah Al Naqbi, head of the maritime rescue department at Dubai Police, said their command and control centre received a report on Monday night that a car had fallen into a valley in Hatta’s mountainous area.

“The Dubai Police’s land and maritime rescue teams rushed immediately to the scene where they found the driver trapped in his vehicle in a muddy area in the valley,” Lt Col Al Naqbi said.

He said rescue teams used a forklift truck to get the car out of the valley and its driver thanked the rescue teams for their quick response to his call for help.

In another incident, Lt Col Al Naqbi said a police patrol was touring a mountainous area in Hatta where they saw a man calling for help as his car fell into a pit that was half flooded, with nobody able to help him.

“The rescue team had to use a crane to extract the vehicle,” Lt Col Al Naqbi said.

He urged drivers to stay away from flooded valleys and rainwater pools and to not camp near floodplains or lowland areas during the volatile weather.

Lt Col underscored the importance of not driving recklessly near dams or flooded areas.

Tightening the screw on rogue recruiters

The UAE overhauled the procedure to recruit housemaids and domestic workers with a law in 2017 to protect low-income labour from being exploited.

Only recruitment companies authorised by the government are permitted as part of Tadbeer, a network of labour ministry-regulated centres.

A contract must be drawn up for domestic workers, the wages and job offer clearly stating the nature of work.

The contract stating the wages, work entailed and accommodation must be sent to the employee in their home country before they depart for the UAE.

The contract will be signed by the employer and employee when the domestic worker arrives in the UAE.

Only recruitment agencies registered with the ministry can undertake recruitment and employment applications for domestic workers.

Penalties for illegal recruitment in the UAE include fines of up to Dh100,000 and imprisonment

But agents not authorised by the government sidestep the law by illegally getting women into the country on visit visas.
