DUBAI // Police say they have been fining people for making a U-turn on a Deira street even though it is not marked as illegal.
The U-turn is on an inner road after Banyas Road, near the Sheraton hotel. Officials say the issue was highlighted after a man complained that the fine against him was unfair.

"An Emirati man complained to the Traffic Department about the fine and that there is no signage indicating that it is prohibited. We examined the area and found out that he was correct," said Maj Gen Mohammed Al Zaffin, head of the Dubai Police traffic department.
The team that went to inspect the intersection found no signage prohibiting the turn.
"The pavement is a bit narrow, but one can still make a U-turn, and more important, there is nothing that indicates that people should not turn from this street," Maj Gen Al Zaffin said.
It was not clear for how long police had been issuing the fines or how many fines had been issued.
"I have ordered officers to compile a record of all the fines that have been issued for this "violation", and those that have not been paid will be waived," Maj Gen al Zaffin said.
He asked anyone who had been fined for the U-turn to contact the department.
