A petrol station supervisor who stole more than half a million dirhams over seven months has been sentenced to six months in prison.
Dubai Criminal Court heard how the 31-year-old, from the Philippines, stole small amounts of cash each day between March and September last year.
The theft came to light when a colleague at the Bur Dubai station noticed Dh5,000 was missing from the day's takings.
“The accused was handing the income at the end of his shift that day when I noticed there was Dh5,000 missing,” a colleague told the court.
“We checked the surveillance cameras and saw him hiding money in his shoes.
“All documents related to payments made to the accused were reviewed and we discovered that he had been stealing money since March.”
The defendant was convicted of theft and forgery and was sentenced to six months in prison to be followed by deportation.
He was also fined Dh614,000 and ordered to repay Dh464,000 to the station.
