DUBAI // A drink driver who ploughed into a restaurant in Al Barsha killing three people and injuring three others has been sentenced to one month in prison and ordered to pay Dh600,000 in blood money.
The Traffic Court also fined NL, 21, from Angola, Dh20,200 after convicting him of drink driving, causing the death of three people, causing injuries, damaging property and driving with an expired licence.
The incident happened on July 26 this year at nearly 3am. CCTV recordings from a nearby hotel show the driver speeding and swerving across the road before losing control of his car and mounting the pavement then ramming into a passerby, knocking him ten metres. The car then ploughs into the restaurant.
Two Asian employees of the restaurant were killed instantly and a third died later from his injuries. Two of those who died were in the kitchen at the time, a third was outside taking a cigarette break.
The defendant confessed to all charges when he appeared in court.
