A worker died and four others were injured in a fire that erupted at a perfume warehouse in Ajman late on Saturday. The worker, an Egyptian man, was taken to Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Hospital in Sharjah where he was pronounced dead due to suffocation as a result of smoke inhalation. The four other injured men were from countries in Africa, police said. Their injuries were described as slight to medium and were treated at the same hospital. It is unclear what started the blaze but authorities said it began in the entrance of the warehouse, trapping the workers inside. Police said the flammable perfumes stored in the warehouse exacerbated the fire. Lt Jamal Hassan Jamal, the civil defence officer on duty, said fire fighters extinguished the blaze quickly but that the warehouse was extensively damaged. They evacuated the neighbouring warehouses and, upon cooling the site, handed it other to police to begin investigating the cause. Brig Mohammed Al Suwaidi, director of the civil defence centres department, called on warehouse owners to ensure emergency exits are kept clear of items and to periodically test the building's fire safety equipment.
