DUBAI // A nurse accused of stealing from her 81-year-old sponsor by his family was cleared after the elderly man came to court to defend her.

The wheelchair-bound Emirati told Dubai Criminal Court that the 26-year-old Sudanese woman did not steal from him.

“I am confident that she never stole anything from me,” he said.

“Even if she stole anything I wouldn’t want for things to reach this.”

The 26-year-old nurse denied stealing a laptop and a watch. She said the items had been given to her as gifts and that she had been beaten up and humiliated by her sponsor’s family.

The woman started working as a home nurse for the Emirati in June last year at his Bur Dubai residence.

She said he gave her the items before leaving the country in October.

A few days later the man’s family found the gifts and called the police.

“When my father left the country we wanted her to move to my brother’s house until his return but she refused,” said the man’s son.

“Later she agreed but on condition that her bags remain in my father’s house.”

He said that shortly after that the nurse said she no longer wanted to work for the family and wished to return to her country.

“At this point my sister searched her bags and found the items,” he said.

The woman was cleared of theft charges by the court.
