The Khor Fakkan Cooperative Fishermen’s Association has announced it is to stop collecting fees from the area’s 250 fishermen.
The association’s chairman, Salah Al Raissi, said almost Dh1 million is collected each year in commission fees for sales at the Khor Fakkan fish auction on the east coast. The association’s board decided to stop collecting the 6 per cent fee as part of its efforts to support fishermen and allow them to use the cash to cover their fuel expenses. This would eventually lead to more regular fishing.
Around Dh200 to Dh300 was collected as commission for every sale depending on the quantities of fish sold, reported Al Ittihad, the Arabic language sister paper of The National.
