Nearly 600 vehicles impounded by UAE authorities returned
The Al Ain Traffic and Patrols Directorate of Abu Dhabi Police has returned 585 vehicles to their owners.
The vehicles were returned last month after the impoundment period ended and all associated fines were paid.
Maj Salah Abdullah Al Humairi, head of the directorate, urged motorists whose vehicles were released to observe traffic laws and avoid repeating the mistakes that had landed them in trouble in the first place.
Under the UAE Federal Traffic Law, a vehicle will be impounded for two months in cases of drunk driving, driving without number plates, and dangerous overtaking by truck drivers.
A vehicle can be seized for one month for a number of offenses, namely, exceeding the legal speed limit by more than 60km, dangerous driving that poses a threat to the public, and over-tinting of car windows.
A vehicle can be impounded for 15 days for running a red light; one week for overloading, and one week for having tyres that do not meet road safety standards.
