National Space Policy adopted by UAE Cabinet

Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid said the National Space Policy would advance the country’s involvement in space exploration and establish it as a major player in the field before the country’s 50th anniversary in 2021.

ABU DHABI // A strategy to develop the space sector was adopted on Sunday by the Cabinet.

Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid, Vice President and Ruler of Dubai, said the National Space Policy would advance the UAE’s involvement in space exploration and establish it as a major player before the country’s 50th anniversary in 2021.

“We have a strong economy, solid infrastructure, national competencies and other accomplishments enabling us to enter the space race in time for our golden jubilee,” he said.

With the UAE operating more than six satellites and investing in excess of Dh20 billion, Sheikh Mohammed said the country’s goal was to build a strong and sustainable space sector.

“We have the largest regional space transportation operator, the largest international companies providing satellite insurance services, an adequate legislative and regulatory environment, and a variety of research centres, all of which aim to ensure the well-being of our people and the world.”

He said the benefits of the space policy included furthering international cooperation through partnerships in the space field, diversifying the economy by creating high-skill technical jobs and boosting research and development centres, and improving the environment through the advancement of climate monitoring.

“The leadership’s vision is to become a leading nation in space sciences and to reach Mars,” said Khalifa Al Romaithi, the UAE Space Agency chairman. “This policy represents an important step towards realising this vision.”
