DUBAI // A man who was arrested for having 25 cannabis plants growing on his balcony claimed it was his mother, with the aid of his pet cat, who had placed them there.

“I smoked the substance then threw away the seeds from the window and they fell into our garden where they grew. But since we have a cat that keeps messing the plants, my mother removed them from the garden into pots and placed them on the balcony,” said the Emirati defendant S F, 31, at the Criminal Court yesterday.

As well as the plants, S F was also found to have 529.3g of hashish and 0.9g of marijuana hidden in his closet, which he said was for his own use.

Dubai Police were tipped off about the defendant so raided his apartment on December 10 last year. Police captain H A said that S F willingly showed him where all his drugs were stashed.

The defendant’s urine sample confirmed he had been consuming hashish.

S F admitted consumption and possession of cannabis but denied a drugs production charge.

The next hearing will be on April 27.
