DUBAI // Three men robbed Dh3 million worth of gold from a man in Deira, a court heard.

The defendants – Mexican J M, 29 and J K, 38, and D R, 34, both from Peru – had been watching the markets for about a week when they saw a man, Z S, coming out of a gold shop on August 7 with a large bag.

Z S said his brother had asked him to purchase 28 kilograms of gold worth about Dh3.63m from a shop in Deira’s gold market.

They followed him to Deira City Centre and waited until he parked his rented car and went inside the mall.

The defendants broke the windows of the car and stole the suitcase containing the gold not realising they were being recorded by CCTV.

“Police called me at nearly 7:30pm and told me the rented car I was driving had been robbed after some men broke its glass windows,” Z S said.

The men drove off but police traced the plate number and found it belonged to another car rental firm which lead police to the defendants. “When we arrested them, they were in a state of fear and confusion. J K was very scared,” said A A, an Emirati police captain.

The three confessed to armed robbery when they appeared on Thursday at Dubai Criminal Court.

The next hearing was set for January 30.
