SHARJAH // Three men have been arrested for breaking into a jewellery shop in Al Ghuwair and stealing seven kilograms of gold valued at Dh1.35m.

Police arrested three of the Pakistani men involved on Saturday and alerted Interpol about the fourth man still at large, according to Sharjah Police chief Big Saif Al Zari.

Police arrived at the scene shortly after the alarm linked to the operations desk was triggered at 4am.

Recordings from CCTV cameras, which were used to identify the thieves, showed two people approach the main entrance of the shop, reported Aletihad, the Arabic-language sister newspaper of The National .

One of the masked raiders stood outside the shop while the other broke in and stole jewellery on display before both fled.

The theft took around three minutes, the video showed.

Police cordoned off the area before conducting a forensic investigation, including collecting fingerprints which helped identify the men who had planned to ship the jewellery abroad, Brig Al Zari said

The police chief urged shop owners to keep jewellery in safes and remove them from display after closing.

In 2014, Sharjah Police announced a project that would see 70 per cent of banks, money exchange and jewellery shops monitored by CCTV cameras directly linked to police operations. The initiative included the installation of 5,000 cameras.
