DUBAI // A man sentenced to a year in prison for stabbing a maintenance technician in the shoulder and leg before stealing two mobile phones and Dh200, has had his jail term cut in half.

The Emirati, 26, denied a charge of robbery and physical assault last April at Dubai Criminal Court.

The victim, 26, from Bangladesh, was walking with a friend near a metro station in Al Riqqa at nearly 2.30am on February 19 this year when he was attacked.

He was stabbed in the left leg and left shoulder before two mobile phones, a Nokia and a Samsung, were snatched out of his hands.

“My wallet which contained Dh200 was stolen too,” he said.

The victim’s Indian friend called police.

The defendant was arrested two days later. “He admitted assaulting the man because they had old differences but he denied robbing him, he also told me he never leaves home without his knife,” said the policeman.

The Dubai Court of Appeal reduced the defendant’s jail term to six months.
