Man who stabbed accountant and stole wages to see out jail term

One of the three men appealed the five-year sentence but Dubai Court of Appeal upheld it

One of three men sentenced to five years in jail for stabbing an accountant and stealing Dh153,000 in employee wages will see out his sentence.

The trio, a 21-year-old Afgani and two Pakistanis aged 28 and 32, were convicted of armed robbery and causing permanent disability to the 24-year-old Indian victim.

They denied charges in both Dubai Criminal Court and Dubai Court of Appeal.

In September 2015, the accountant was returning to work at 11am after withdrawing the salaries of three employees from RAKBank in Al Qusais when he was attacked by three men.

The victim told the court that one of the men snatched the envelope of cash from him and, when he tried to chase them, was stabbed repeatedly by all three men.

"A man who saw me bleeding came to my help and called police," said the man, who was rushed to hospital and was left with 15 per cent disability in his wrist.
"I was driving back from a meeting when I saw a man bleeding heavily on the floor. I stopped my car and went to his help, he told me what happened and I called police right away," said the 28-year-old Indian witness.
Police identified and arrested the men in Sharjah.

“We found the knives they used in the assault and we also found some of the cash in their car,” said a police officer.

During police questioning, the men allegedly admitted to stealing the cash because they were going through financial difficulties.

However, the three men denied all charges in both Dubai Criminal Court.
They were convicted and sentenced to five years in jail each to be followed by deportation.
The Afghani defendant appealed seeking to be acquitted but Dubai Court of Appeal upheld his sentence.
