DUBAI // An unemployed alcoholic will have to see out a five-year jail term for raping his mentally impaired mother over a four-year period.
Emirati drug user E B was convicted of rape and consuming alcohol without a licence on February 26 at Dubai Criminal Court. He appealed both the prison sentence he was handed for the rape as well as a fine of Dh2,000 for consuming alcohol, but he lost both battles as Dubai Court of Appeal upheld the punishments.
He had taken advantage of his 55-year-old mother’s deteriorating health since 2010 by sexually assaulting her and threatening to beat her up if she refused.
According to court documents, a severe epileptic episode led to permanent damage to some of his mother’s brain tissue, which in turn resulted in deterioration of her intelligence and a slowing of her perception and thinking process.
On May 15, 2013, the man dragged his mother into her room, took off her clothes and raped her after drinking six bottles of an unnamed alcohol.
The family’s housemaid reported the incident to the man’s brother, who beat up his older sibling before calling police.
Another brother told of how E B was an alcoholic and took drugs.
The second brother added: “He had been sexually assaulting our mother since 2010 – I caught him once in that year when I saw through his room window. She told me herself what happened several times.”
A medical report confirmed that the man was mentally competent and aware of his actions but his mother was not.
