Man ‘stole Dh100,000 from unlocked car of father on school run in Ajman’

Asian man has been arrested after allegedly taking a sealed envelope containing Dh107,000 from the car of a father doing the school run.

AJMAN // A man has been arrested over the theft of Dh107,000 from a parked car at a school.

Police said the Asian man took an envelope left by a father who was picking up his child, then wired most of the money back to his home country.

Ajman Police said the father withdrew the money from a bank and put it in a sealed envelope in his car before leaving it for the school.

Col Abdullah Al Matrooshi, director of CID, said the father left his car without making sure it was locked properly.

Officers identified the car in which the man left and tracked it to his home in Dubai, he said.

Ajman and Dubai police arrested him at his flat and found Dh16,000 in cash. They also found a money transfer receipt for Dh81,630 to his country.

Police said that during questioning, the man confessed to breaking into the car and stealing the money.

Col Al Matrooshi urged residents not to leave large amounts of money or valuables in vehicles. He also called for people to be discreet when carrying large sums of money.
