A security guard stabbed his wife to death before trying to kill himself, Dubai Criminal Court was told.
On September 7, the couple were left alone in their room in Al Rahba by the defendant’s roommate.
“I have never seen them fight before and both were happy that day because his wife had been to a job interview and it was promising,” said the 27-year-old roommate from Cameroon.
He said that once he returned to the room, he saw a group of maintenance workers gathered outside his door, unable to get in.
"I started knocking on the door but there was no answer and I was sure that the couple were inside. I called him on his mobile phone but he didn't answer so I called for the supervisor to unlock the door with the spare key," the roommate said.
When the supervisor opened the door, it became stuck by the woman's body on the floor. The supervisor locked the door and called police.
Police and an ambulance team found the wife's body in a pool of blood near the door. The defendant was sitting on the floor next to the bed and bleeding heavily from his stomach.
The 26-year-old defendant, from Cameroon, was taken to hospital where he was treated for six stab wounds to his abdomen.
During police questioning, the defendant said he went to the toilet and returned to find his Cameroonian wife — whose age was not disclosed in records — holding a knife and threatening to kill herself.
“He said he took the knife from her and began stabbing her. When she tried to run away, he stabbed her in the back after which she fell motionless,” said an Emirati lieutenant, 44.
After seeing his wife dead, the defendant then stabbed himself in the stomach.
In court, the defendant denied charge of premeditated murder and attempting suicide.
The next hearing will be held on May 20 to appoint the accused a defence lawyer.

Baha'Ullah, the founder of the Bahai faith, was exiled by the Ottoman Empire in 1868 from Iran to what is now Israel. Now, the Bahai faith's highest governing body, known as the Universal House of Justice, is based in the Israeli city of Haifa, which the Bahais turn towards during prayer.
The Houthis cite this as collective "evidence" of Bahai "links" to Israel - which the Houthis consider their enemy.
