DUBAI // A man has had his charge downgraded from possession of drug with intent to sell to just possession, after he told a court that more than 1 kilogram of amphetamines was for personal use.

“Are you going to use more than one kilo by yourself?” asked presiding judge Mohammed Jamal.

The defendant, 24, said that he only went home once every two years so he bought enough drugs to see him through.

Prosecutors said that the Pakistani defendant was arrested at Dubai International Airport on February 7 carrying 1.3kg of amphetamines as he returned from his home country.

During police and prosecution investigations, he denied knowing he was carrying drugs, saying he was handed bags by a friend in Pakistan who asked him to deliver them to a man in Dubai.

But at Dubai Criminal Court on Tuesday, he admitted to carrying drugs. A verdict is expected on June 18.
