DUBAI // A man killed himself early on Monday morning after he jumped onto the Metro track, police said.
The holiday weekend death is the first on the Dubai Metro track.
“A man’s body was found at around 6am in front of the Jumeirah Lakes Towers station,” Maj Gen Mattar Khamis Al Mezaina, deputy commander in chief of Dubai Police, said.
“After we identified him and spoke to his employers and colleagues, it appeared to be a suicide bid.”
Tests proved he was drunk.
Investigation records from Dubai Police Transport Security Department and the Roads and Transport Authority reveal that the man, identified only as H?U?M, was a 36-year-old driver, who had lived in Dubai since 2010.
“His brother told investigators that he wanted to return back to his home country, India, and had quit his job.
“However, after his resignation was accepted, he faced some delays by the company, which affected him and his behaviour,” Maj Gen Al Mezaina said.
The man jumped over a low barrier fence onto the tracks.
A missing person’s report was filed by his roommate the next day, Maj Al Mezaina said, adding that investigations are still ongoing.
“Technical precautions are also being taken to raise the low barrier fence in the area and others,” he said.
The incident caused a two-hour delay between Nakheel and Ibn Batutta stations.
The suicide is the second in just over a week.
A Somali man jumped to his death on November 27 from the fourth floor of the Gloria Hotel on Sheikh Zayed Road, next to Dubai Internet City.
Maj Gen Al Mezaina said yesterday that investigations revealed new details on the death.
“The man was only recently released from prison,” he said.
“The financial burden of what he had to deal with was too much for him, and he found this was his only way out of it, after his family refused to assist him.”
The Somali was an elderly man aged between 62 and 68 years, according to police.

Cases filled with cash that was said to amount to $560m in 100 dollar notes, that was kept by a group of Libyans in Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso.
A second stash was said to have been held in Accra, Ghana, inside boxes at the local offices of an international human rights organisation based in France.
