Man hides drugs in son's luggage during smuggle attempt

The man and his son arrived in Dubai two months ago and were found to be carrying drugs

A man stashed hundreds of illegal tramadol tablets in his teenage son’s luggage in an attempt to smuggle the drugs into Dubai, a court heard on Wednesday

The Egyptian father, 43, arrived with his son, 15, at Dubai International Airport on February 28. The pair entered with visit visas but court documents did not reveal where they arrived from.

During a search of their luggage, customs inspectors found 426 tramadol tablets in the son’s bag and a further 994 tablets and 189 grams of hashish wrapped in plastic and hidden in the father’s bag.

The pair were taken to Dubai Police's Anti-narcotics department where, during questioning, the father said he hid the drugs in his son's suitcase.
At the Dubai Criminal Court, he was charged with smuggling drugs and implicating his son. Court documents did not disclose what happened to the son.
He admitted to both charges and requested the court's mercy.
A verdict is due on May 5.
