A worker who persuaded a maid to abscond from her employer then forced her into prostitution was jailed for five years on Sunday.
The 28-year-old Bangladeshi defendant was convicted of human trafficking at Dubai Criminal Court and will be deported after serving his sentence. His co-accused countryman, 22, was found not guilty.
Prosecutors told the court that the pair made contact with the maid last year but it was not clear how they got to know her. The maid, a 21-year-old Bangladeshi, said she arrived in the UAE two years ago but last year was approached by one of the defendants, who asked about her salary.
“He told me other women work per hour and make much more money,” she said.
That persuaded her to flee the home where she worked and she was taken to an apartment in International City, where she met two countrywomen who told her she would be working in prostitution, like them.
“I refused to do so for about 10 days but then I was beaten into it and worked for nearly three months before I was arrested in a car with a customer,” she said.
A police lieutenant testified that they received a tip-off about one of the defendants offering the victim for sale in return for Dh2,800.
“The defendant was kept under observation and was arrested in a sting operation on November 24 last year after an undercover policeman posed as the buyer. The victim was not aware she was being sold; she thought she was with a customer,” said the policeman.
After the arrest, police raided the brothel where the victim was kept and five women were found there with birth control pills and other items used in prostitution. The second defendant was also arrested there.
The accused pair denied forcing their countrywoman into prostitution and told the court that she was doing it willingly. It was not revealed why the second defendant was found not guilty.
The man convicted can appeal his sentence within two weeks.

Ads on social media can 'normalise' drugs
A UK report on youth social media habits commissioned by advocacy group Volteface found a quarter of young people were exposed to illegal drug dealers on social media.
The poll of 2,006 people aged 16-24 assessed their exposure to drug dealers online in a nationally representative survey.
Of those admitting to seeing drugs for sale online, 56 per cent saw them advertised on Snapchat, 55 per cent on Instagram and 47 per cent on Facebook.
Cannabis was the drug most pushed by online dealers, with 63 per cent of survey respondents claiming to have seen adverts on social media for the drug, followed by cocaine (26 per cent) and MDMA/ecstasy, with 24 per cent of people.

How has net migration to UK changed?
The figure was broadly flat immediately before the Covid-19 pandemic, standing at 216,000 in the year to June 2018 and 224,000 in the year to June 2019.
It then dropped to an estimated 111,000 in the year to June 2020 when restrictions introduced during the pandemic limited travel and movement.
The total rose to 254,000 in the year to June 2021, followed by steep jumps to 634,000 in the year to June 2022 and 906,000 in the year to June 2023.
The latest available figure of 728,000 for the 12 months to June 2024 suggests levels are starting to decrease.

Will the pound fall to parity with the dollar?
The idea of pound parity now seems less far-fetched as the risk grows that Britain may split away from the European Union without a deal.
Rupert Harrison, a fund manager at BlackRock, sees the risk of it falling to trade level with the dollar on a no-deal Brexit. The view echoes Morgan Stanley’s recent forecast that the currency can plunge toward $1 (Dh3.67) on such an outcome. That isn’t the majority view yet – a Bloomberg survey this month estimated the pound will slide to $1.10 should the UK exit the bloc without an agreement.
New Prime Minister Boris Johnson has repeatedly said that Britain will leave the EU on the October 31 deadline with or without an agreement, fuelling concern the nation is headed for a disorderly departure and fanning pessimism toward the pound. Sterling has fallen more than 7 per cent in the past three months, the worst performance among major developed-market currencies.
“The pound is at a much lower level now but I still think a no-deal exit would lead to significant volatility and we could be testing parity on a really bad outcome,” said Mr Harrison, who manages more than $10 billion in assets at BlackRock. “We will see this game of chicken continue through August and that’s likely negative for sterling,” he said about the deadlocked Brexit talks.
The pound fell 0.8 per cent to $1.2033 on Friday, its weakest closing level since the 1980s, after a report on the second quarter showed the UK economy shrank for the first time in six years. The data means it is likely the Bank of England will cut interest rates, according to Mizuho Bank.
The BOE said in November that the currency could fall even below $1 in an analysis on possible worst-case Brexit scenarios. Options-based calculations showed around a 6.4 per cent chance of pound-dollar parity in the next one year, markedly higher than 0.2 per cent in early March when prospects of a no-deal outcome were seemingly off the table.
