Dubai // A man beat his wife and dragged her by the hair from room to room in a drunken rage before locking her in the toilet, a court has heard.
The man was arrested after violent scenes that included the couple tugging their toddler son between them, Dubai Misdemeanours Court heard.
Police said that when they arrived they found the woman, who had escaped from the toilet, barefoot and begging passers-by for help because her son of 18 months was alone with her drunk husband.
The Syrian woman, A A, 23, said her husband started a fight on June 16 last year and insulted her.
Officers said that when they arrived at the flat in The Gardens area they found Jordanian R A, 34, sitting surrounded by bottles of alcohol.
One of the officers, M D, said the man screamed at them that he had done nothing wrong.
He said he and his colleague convinced the man to allow his wife back into the flat to take their son.
She grabbed the boy, who then became the rope in a violent tug of war until the father managed to wrest him off her him.
“He tried to lock the door but we did not let him. Then he agreed to give the baby to his mother,” said the other officer, M A.
The husband assaulted M D and resisted arrest, the court heard.
The husband claimed he had a fight with his wife on June 15 after which she left the house, returning the next morning with police.
He was charged with assaulting a police officer, assaulting his wife, insulting his wife, and possessing and drinking alcohol illegally.
The man confessed to drinking and possessing alcohol but denied the rest. A verdict is expected soon.
