A man strangled a prostitute to death before stealing her mobile phone and taking back Dh150 he had paid her for sex, a court heard.
Police were alerted to the incident after a security guard at the deceased's apartment block in Al Baraha, Dubai, traced an "intolerable' smell to her flat.
Officers obtained a warrant and knocked down the door to her flat - finding the dead woman's body on the floor under the sink, Dubai Criminal Court was told.
"There were no signs of violence in the place to indicate a robbery but the victim's phone was missing so we started looking for it until we found that it was sold to a shop in the area," said an Emirati police officer, 28.
The defendant, a 33-year-old blacksmith from Pakistan, was tracked down in Al Ain, where he was arrested at his residence.
He denied charges of premeditated murder and theft, admitting he had consensual sex with the victim but insisting he did not mean to kill her.
Records show that Dubai police's operations room received a report of bad odours coming from the flat in on February 24 of this year.
"The apartment was on the second floor, a tenant next door called me and complained about the bad smell. I cleaned the entire corridor but the smell was still there, so I traced the smell to the victim's flat," said the Indian security guard, who called his management to send a team of cleaners.
"They came and said that with a smell that bad there must be something wrong," said the guard who then called police.
Records state that the defendant admitted meeting the woman on February 23 and after having sex in return for Dh150, he said the woman stole another Dh150 from him.
He said that they argued then engaged in a fight. The woman grabbed him from his shirt and he wrapped a cloth around her neck.
Prosecutors said that he choked her with one hand and pulled on the cloth with the other until the woman dropped dead.
He stole her mobile phone and the cash he paid her for sex then left and locked the door from outside, the court was told.
The next hearing is scheduled for June 27.

Plan to boost public schools
A major shake-up of government-run schools was rolled out across the country in 2017. Known as the Emirati School Model, it placed more emphasis on maths and science while also adding practical skills to the curriculum.
It was accompanied by the promise of a Dh5 billion investment, over six years, to pay for state-of-the-art infrastructure improvements.
Aspects of the school model will be extended to international private schools, the education minister has previously suggested.
Recent developments have also included the introduction of moral education - which public and private schools both must teach - along with reform of the exams system and tougher teacher licensing requirements.

HAEMOGLOBIN DISORDERS EXPLAINED
Thalassaemia is part of a family of genetic conditions affecting the blood known as haemoglobin disorders.
Haemoglobin is a substance in the red blood cells that carries oxygen and a lack of it triggers anemia, leaving patients very weak, short of breath and pale.
The most severe type of the condition is typically inherited when both parents are carriers. Those patients often require regular blood transfusions - about 450 of the UAE's 2,000 thalassaemia patients - though frequent transfusions can lead to too much iron in the body and heart and liver problems.
The condition mainly affects people of Mediterranean, South Asian, South-East Asian and Middle Eastern origin. Saudi Arabia recorded 45,892 cases of carriers between 2004 and 2014.
A World Health Organisation study estimated that globally there are at least 950,000 'new carrier couples' every year and annually there are 1.33 million at-risk pregnancies.

Who was Alfred Nobel?
The Nobel Prize was created by wealthy Swedish chemist and entrepreneur Alfred Nobel.
- In his will he dictated that the bulk of his estate should be used to fund "prizes to those who, during the preceding year, have conferred the greatest benefit to humankind".
- Nobel is best known as the inventor of dynamite, but also wrote poetry and drama and could speak Russian, French, English and German by the age of 17. The five original prize categories reflect the interests closest to his heart.
- Nobel died in 1896 but it took until 1901, following a legal battle over his will, before the first prizes were awarded.

Will the pound fall to parity with the dollar?
The idea of pound parity now seems less far-fetched as the risk grows that Britain may split away from the European Union without a deal.
Rupert Harrison, a fund manager at BlackRock, sees the risk of it falling to trade level with the dollar on a no-deal Brexit. The view echoes Morgan Stanley’s recent forecast that the currency can plunge toward $1 (Dh3.67) on such an outcome. That isn’t the majority view yet – a Bloomberg survey this month estimated the pound will slide to $1.10 should the UK exit the bloc without an agreement.
New Prime Minister Boris Johnson has repeatedly said that Britain will leave the EU on the October 31 deadline with or without an agreement, fuelling concern the nation is headed for a disorderly departure and fanning pessimism toward the pound. Sterling has fallen more than 7 per cent in the past three months, the worst performance among major developed-market currencies.
“The pound is at a much lower level now but I still think a no-deal exit would lead to significant volatility and we could be testing parity on a really bad outcome,” said Mr Harrison, who manages more than $10 billion in assets at BlackRock. “We will see this game of chicken continue through August and that’s likely negative for sterling,” he said about the deadlocked Brexit talks.
The pound fell 0.8 per cent to $1.2033 on Friday, its weakest closing level since the 1980s, after a report on the second quarter showed the UK economy shrank for the first time in six years. The data means it is likely the Bank of England will cut interest rates, according to Mizuho Bank.
The BOE said in November that the currency could fall even below $1 in an analysis on possible worst-case Brexit scenarios. Options-based calculations showed around a 6.4 per cent chance of pound-dollar parity in the next one year, markedly higher than 0.2 per cent in early March when prospects of a no-deal outcome were seemingly off the table.
